The prestigious Institution of Civil Engineers North West Awards are open for nominations in 4 categories. The Merit Award  is for projects displaying excellence and imaginative concepts in any aspect of civil engineering, such as design, construction, research and development, or any combination of these categories (awarded in 2008 to the Northwich Salt Mines Stabilisation Project). The Community Award is for a project that has led to a recognisable or measurable improvement to quality of life for the people who use it or are affected by it (awarded in 2008 to the A66 Temple Sowerby Bypass in Cumbria).
